Shima Uta’s legacy foretold Hello Project
Radicalpatriot throw’s up this line in the ending paragraph – “Bad music. We are all victimized by it. That is, all of us except for Hello Project followers”. Hmmm, as much as I like H!P and Momusu in general, I’m not sure I agree with that at all.
The rest of it makes for some very interesting reading, and I’m genuinely curious about Latin influenced J-music, as Radicalpatriot’s case for Alfredo Casero is an enjoyable one. At first the PV just looked like a bad parody, but the song was pretty damn catchy after awhile. Recommended reading.

Thanx, wu-san, for the good catch. What I MEANT to say is that bad-music listeners can find a refuge overseas in general; I’ve made a meager edit to try and straighten out what is, indeed, a bizarre post.

Did Casero just cover the song, or did he do it first and The Boom second? Also, I think I’ve heard “Shima Uta” somewhere else before … is it from a folk song?

It might be based on an Okinawan folk song, but The Boom did it in the 90s. His version is cool, not exactly the same. It’s funny cause the Boom are not Okinawan either. I don’t have the record or I’d post it.

Holy moly, Jimhaku. You’re not gloing to believe this one. I have a DVD from the South Valley Peace Center that shows an Asian string music ensemble playing this exact same Shima Uta melody! The DVD is basically an anti-Iraq War rant, but there it is, Shima Uta, on instruments! I’ll try and pull off an excerpt and post it asap. And, yes, it appears to have an Okinawan origin. Did The Boom’s version have the same lyrics as Casero?

I believe it…he was definately covering The Boom’s version, tho. It was a minor hit, but I think his is better known because of the soccer tie-ins or whatever. I’m really not sure how close the versions are other than that that unless I hear it again. I don’t think he knows Japanese well enough to be writing new words.
