[Blogs] 4 Out Of 5 Puffy AmiYumi Fans Agree: Avril Lavigne Sucks

All Because of Avril Lavigne

Recommended reading. The news that Avril Lavigne is going to write (or at least be given songwriting credit alongside Butch Walker on) the forthcoming Puffy AmiYumi single “All Because of You”, isn’t sitting well with many Puffy fans, including Jeff at the Puffy blog AmiYumidas. Jeff links several other reactions (including a thread about the single and collaboration at fan site PuffyAmiYumiWorld.com and this editor’s “nasty and NSFW blog post” on the subject) to back up his assertion that Avril isn’t qualified to be involved with anything within a 100-mile radius of Puffy, and also advises Ami and Yumi not to make a big deal out of the collaboration because of Avril’s repeatedly tarnished reputation.

  1. She’s not singing on it right? What’s the big deal? She’s probably just a fan and she’s a big star so she can get in on semi-co-writing a song for them.

    She is pretty bad lyrically and it could suck but I’ll wait to hear it.

  2. I really don’t understand why this is such a big deal.

  3. I’m not an Avril fan I’d rather be able to say “Avril wrote a song for them” to somebody to explain how popular they are than “um…they have a kid’s cartoon based on them” or “they do the Teen Titans theme”. The damn TT theme is on 3 different American albums I think. It’s cool but that’s like their big accomplishment in America. There’s no way it can be a bad thing for them to be able to say even if it sucks. They’re being recognized. They could be fans themselves anyway. It’s a big deal.

  4. Big deal in a good way.

  5. Nothing against Avril, but she’s just an average singer, a mediocre composer and has no business messing with Puffy AmiYumi’s unique musical style. This better for Avril’s career than Puffy’s, for sure.

  6. She is…kinda famous.

  7. You know what? I kinda dig the Japanese version of Girlfriend.

    This page is not noticed too much, but her regular page had over a million friends. Puffy’s page has 10,000. WE didn’t have MySpace when they were peaking of course, and I don’t Avril will have their kind of staying power. But right now Avril is way bigger than them and the music they make is not that different. If Puffy even did a straight cover of a lesser known song of hers and didn’t say anything at first, I bet nobody would notice or would dig it.

  8. @jim: Was Girlfriend the one she recorded in a bunch of different languages? I should check that out, I don’t think I actually ever listened to the Japanese version. I wonder how well the lyrics made it over to so many different languges, you’d have to think some of the meaning would be lost.

    Wasn’t there an Avril Lavigne tribute album released in Japan a while ago, or am I imagining that? I guess she’s pretty popular over there. Truthfully, Ami and Yumi are probably thrilled.

  9. @jimhaku: Puffy’s popular? Yeah…their latest single didn’t even chart the top 50, meaning it probably sold 1,000. I don’t think that’s very popular by anyone’s standards.

    @Radicalpatriot: Wait…Avril can actually compose?

    I hate Avril, but if Puffy wants it, it’s their deal.

  10. @chao: Basing popularity on one single is probably not the best way to determine status. The album following this single made the top twenty on Oricon. Also, saying “it probably sold 1000 copies” is misleading–what if there were multiple high-sellers released in the same week? Ten singles selling 30-50k each would raise the bar for a lot of other artists. (I really don’t know how it did, honestly, just putting that out there.) Puffy’s first single sold something like over a million copies, and just the fact that they have a US career (well, sort of) is proof of their popularity. But that’s just what I think. :)
