OceanLab’s “Sirens of the Sea”
Highly recommended reading. Here’s another generation-gap read for me, though in a different mode than usual. There’s talk about learning to appreciate The Who and a really nice quote from Lester Bangs and then learning to appreciate jazz… all in the service of I loved this music when I first heard it, then I wasn’t sure, then I learned to love it on a technical level. It’s all so thoroughly charming and nostalgia-inducing… I’d use the word “precocious” but it’s a little more than that, the self-awareness carries beyond such a simple compliment, especially the way it knowingly captures a moment of youthful, self-serious epiphany in a sardonic fashion.
It would’ve been fun to see the main thrust of this piece applied more thoroughly to the album – or even looking over a range of music that provoked such a reaction, if you wanna get ambitious about it – but what we have here is definitely a gem. Do yourself a favor and give it a read!
