Goto Maki details on last album prior to hiatus – aramatheydidnt

The details of Gocchin’s first full length album for Avex have been released, and it is a very impressive effort. The Limited Edition is especially drool-worthy, though it apparently comes with the expected hefty price tag. Her final concert has also been announced, appropriately called G-Emotion FINAL, and is set for December 4. Seeing the fanfare now being given to these events, one can’t help but ask the obvious questions, given the trajectory of Goto’s career.

First, one has to wonder if Avex would have gone all-out for Gocchin if she wasn’t going on hiatus – perhaps forever, though that does seem unlikely. She was one of the biggest superstars in the idol world a decade ago; they could have done so much more right off the bat to help her reclaim that stature.

Second, one has to wonder if the fans would care so much about this album and concert if she wasn’t about to disappear from the spotlight. In this case, I would definitely count myself among the guilty – I was amused and intrigued by her jump to Avex, but while following her career I really wasn’t very interested in giving her music a chance. I think the last time I really did enjoy her work – as opposed to the spectacle of her career – was “Yokohama Shinkirou”. Now, though, I really want to hear what her swan song is going to sound like – partly out of morbid curiosity, yes, but mostly because what I did hear of her Avex songs were very solid, and if I don’t re-evaluate and prioritize now, then when should I?

Of course, hindsight is 20/20 and that’s the whole point, isn’t it? Gocchin is going through that herself, on a much higher level of magnitude, and that’s what led her to decide to go on hiatus in the first place. So the best we can do is give her as heartfelt and resounding a farewell as possible, in the hopes that she’ll decide it’s worth returning when she’s ready.
