I JUST HAD AN EPIPHANY!!!! (aka. OMG I’m getting old D:D:D:)

You know, with everyone in the H!P fan world praising Aibon (after ditching her for her scandals and PBs *shrugs*) because she said that AKB was nowhere as good as H!P is, I had an epiphany!! It was simply triggered in my brain!!!!

EDIT: No need to curse all that much in the blog *seatdrop* See, I got carried away because sadly, IRL I curse like a pirate XD

Here’s how my thought process went:

1. OMG WTF?

2. That’s not really classy of her to say, especially when AKB girls are all super humble, and there are quite a few of MM fans in the group, who openly admit it and gush about their favorite idols! And even the girls who aren’t fans, they always refer to MM as their “big and important senpai” looking up to them and stuff. They’ve NEVER EVER claimed that they were even a competition against H!P in any way…

3. You know what? I don’t give a fuck. H!P could be the best thing in the music world, music and performance wise, I’d still stick with AKB songs because…. I’M TOO OLD FOR H!P!!!

Ok, now before I get flamed like crazy, allow me to explain myself:

I know that there are fans of H!P who are WAY older than me, and of course, fans of AKB who are younger than me too. (I’m 22, BTW) but the truth is that I’m a straight girl, I don’t like watching girls in my daily life, and the only reason why I watch these particular girls is because I like their songs, and I feel like I can relate to them somehow. (and that’s why I watch their idol DVDs too, of course *whistle*)

now, you might ask wtf does this have to do with anything? Well, I used to be a very mentally innocent person when it comes to love, so I adored Berryz songs, and (believe it or not) their lyrics too. It’s just like Ray wrote not so long ago, some people think that music is a trascendental thing, like finding a BGM for your life and everything that happens in it, well, I’m like that exactly.

So, back in the day, whenever my bf didn’t call me for days I always blasted Gocchin’s “Yokohama Shinkirou” in rebound mode or something like that. And of course, the first date was actually me humming “Tanoshii na lalalala Tanoshii na Hora! DEETO wa tanoshii na”

But then…

Well, let’s just leave the details out and say that a few years went by, and I grew up while H!P just became disturbingly younger and younger every time (disturbing for my life BGM purposes I mean XD). And, also, Koharu happened. With her sugar high songs with random instrumentals and derailed smile in her PVS and I went “Uh… not really my thing”

And while this might ruin my net reputation forever (like I have one LOL) I just have to accept the truth, I’d much rather listen to lyrics like “We fell in love like a roller coaster, our skins longing for each other, we dreamt a fleeting dream” than a song about a Bus Guide (really, honestly, I truly did love Berryz so much, but then I sort of… can’t relate to such songs anymore!) So yeah, you’re getting this kinda right, I grew up and then I didn’t care about Amulet Eggs people or something like that it’s like “Omg they’re 9 kthxbai”

So yeah, the next point you’ll say is “AKB has lolis too! And of course, innocent songs as well!!! WTF is wrong with you, you bitch???” and I’ll say: Yeah, but not quite. I don’t like the AKB lolis for the most part, and the vast majority of my favorite AKB members are over 18… and while sometimes I do hum GARASU no I Love you to myself, I’d rather hum “Junai no Crescendo” LOLOL

I also have to point out a funny thing that happened to me that made me realize why I might have given up on H!P, randomly, Abe Natsumi and Yajima Maimi’s duet “16sai no koi nante” started playing and, while paying attention to the lyrics, I could totally relate to EVERYTHING Nacchi was saying, shaking my head at Maimi’s naive lines. So I thought “Damn, I’m elder club fan material… Now it’s really for sure!!!” XD XD XD Ahhh… growing up sucks D:

To sum this up, as it’s always been the case, it IS a matter of liking one thing or the other, but for me, and around the time AKB48 was actually created, I wanted to listen to something a bit more grown up lyrics wise.

Please keep in mind that not all of us girls want to listen to STRAWBERYY PIE AYAYAYAYAYAYAIIII FOR MAI DAAARIN!!! all the time… *shrugs* And this of course, doesn’t mean that I think AKB lyrics have a mystical and philosophical depth unbeknownst to man kind prior to their existence, because, come on, these girls have sung about ALL of the freaking bones in the human body! It’s just… I like their lyrics more and that’s it. 😛

So if in your mind AKB = slutty

in mine H!P = teen love

They go together sometimes yeah, but that’s a whole other post and for a whole different kind of media that’s not exactly this blog XD

Hahahaha. That tweet caused a lot of shit. XD (I wasn’t happy either, mind you. Just saying.)

I totally get this post, even though I’m still a teen who can relate to H!P songs. I used to go OMG AKB SONGS ARE SO CREEPY ._. but now Im like YEAAAAH WOOOO reading the lyrics to like, Kuroi Tenshi and Mr. Kissman and stuff. XD It’s just more interesting. :3

^ Totally!! I mean, I still listen to H!P (OMG Kimagure Princess is amazing! 😀 😀 :D) But AKB lyrics are either “interesting” or “LOLZ WTF??? Laydown is dirty :3”

I think AKB lyrics are great in that they don’t just focus on the happy, sugary side of life. It’s kind of disappointing when you get caught up in happy lyrics, and then you find out that that stuff doesn’t happen in real life. D: In that sense, AKB48 just feels more down-to-earth than other idol groups.

…Aki-P must be feeling pretty cheeky right about now. XDD

“That’s not really classy of her to say” … let’s face it: Aibon has NEVER been classy XD

Oh le gawd my post about that Aibon tweet became a monster… WHAT HAVE I DONE!? XD I just thought people would like to know 🙁 *sob* now they link my post in forums and stuff… I feel like a lot of people are hating me right now XD

NO ME ODIES POR INFORMAR * ^ * xD

PS: Still one of those weird people who love H!P 🙁

  6. Comment by Julia on January 18, 2010 2:40 pm

    That makes sense.

For me, I think I always preferred the dramatic songs in H!P, and I always fangirlspazzed over the crazy LYRICS AKB had in their dramatic singles, so when I discovered there was that much more awesome dramatic stuff to love in AKB’s music, and I was already frustrated with H!P as it was, it was all too easy for me to jump ship. Sometimes I think it’s a little silly that I’m into idols but I prefer their depressing/dark/dramatic songs over the typical idolly ones, but oh well, I dare to be different. XD

Aibon can go take more pictures of her butt crack or something.

@ Arche: No, claro que no te odio! Si tú no tienes nada que ver con su comentario! jajajaja Ni siquiera odio a Kago! XD Es más, fue mi idol favorita por miles de años!
BTW, yeah, classy is definitely NOT a word to define anything Kago has done over the last 5 years or something like that XD And no, I didn’t mean to write it like people who like H!P music are weirdos or anything, because, like I said, I still like H!P music myself, but it’s just getting too young for me XD Which means that I’m a perverted emo grown up person or something :3 Again, I don’t want to create the impression that I find H!P fans weird or whatever for their musical taste, because I know that there are many MANY reasons why you might like a song, not only its lyrics, and especially not in Jpop, so yeah, I hope I clarified that bit 😀

@Julia: Yeah, exactly. I’m just like that. When you look at my most played songs in iTunes it’s all Inochi no tsukaimichi, Daruikanji, Keibetsu, Kaiyuugyo… Not exactly the happiest songs ever (and then Dakishimeraretara, Innocence, Seifuku and perverted songs of that kind XD)
For me it was the Elder Club graduation that sealed the deal… Then everything was super hyper cute and lolified. Not really my thing (although I still think that Kimagure Princess was the most awesome MM singer in years! 😀 :D: 😀 )

XD I do like some of AKB lyrics. I mean woooh, crazy stuff. What did they smoke or what kind of porno movie did they watch before writting that. I like. LOLOLOLOL.

XDDDD Aibon también solía ser mi idol favorita antes de Konkon. Ahí estaban empatadas en primero. PERO LUEGO LLEGÓ RISAKO y buu jaja xD Oh Risako ♥

Hey did I say I wub ya ;D

    XD!

I wonder what would’ve happened if Aibon hadn’t mentioned AKB in her tweet xD Probably nothing.

I started as a jpop fan, mostly listening to Ayumi Hamasaki because of her lyrics. She is quite honest with herself and her fans when writing and composing, and the result is very deep lyrics that are easy to relate with at the same time. And I also like 80’s new wave groups and Nagomu stuff, which have very weird lyrics and different points of view about life and Japan in general, so… reading through Project Hello’s lyrics was a letdown for me. H!P music IS good, and the singing ability of Elder Club is/was great and terribly underused, but I felt the lyrics were not only vain and repetitive, but also kinda chauvinistic xD I don’t recall many H!P songs saying “Fuck off, I’ll find a better man on my own”, and while yes, it’s Japan, the whole “girls can’t live without a guy” lyrics irked me.

So it was a nice surprise to find AKB songs like “Confession”, or “Inochi no Tsukaimichi” or even “Stand Up” that didn’t followed that pattern. I like how many of their songs aren’t just about boyfriends and breaking up, just the way life is (now I just need a song about paying bills and I’m done xD).

I have a 24 year old friend that got married recently and loves H!P. So no, you’re not too old for idols xD It’s just that you’re right, it’s a matter of taste, and it changes through the years. Even I rarely listen to Ayu’s songs nowadays, no matter how deep they are xD

“(now I just need a song about paying bills and I’m done xD)”

You need ‘Erai Hito ni Naritakunai.’ Kind of.

I definitely read the name ‘Nacchi’ and got excited. And then was all, ‘Oh.’

I apologize beforehand but I think there is something internally brewing inside you.

You have to understand where Kago is coming from. She is my favourity H!P member of all time so it could be I’m a little bias but I don’t feel that way about her post.

Yes, she did say H!P was technically greater than AKB48 BUT you have to understand where she stands. As far as her life and being idol and becoming famous, she owes it all to H!P. She probably would have grown up like a normal japanese girl does instead of being the Kago we all came to enjoy watching on TV or in performances. At the end of the day, what her statement shows is that she appreciates and will NEVER forget what H!P did for her and in that sense, she will always feel that H!P is better than AKB.

Now, people may say she dislikes H!P and UFA but I believe she has realized a long time ago that everything from scandal to scandal was all her fault. She made a mistake and paid for it with her career quickly vanishing before her eyes and is now in the process of trying to rebuild it. In that sense, H!P firing her was another major step in her life. At the time, it may have seemed bad, but UFA fired her and it was the right decision for her personal development.

Also, nowhere in her statement does she say that she hates AKB48 or even dislikes them. Even if AKB48 members have read that, I don’t feel like they would feel offended either. They understand where she is coming from because they are also idols with roots who will one day leave AKB48.

  12. Comment by Cat on January 19, 2010 4:28 am

@thechampion: I really don’t think that any of the other girls who have been in H!P at one point or another would say something like that. And I have to make one point clear too, I don’t hate Kago for this or anything, she’s free to say whatever she wants! I firmly believe in freedom of speech…

But it did bug me at that point just for the reason I stated in the post. Of course, I would expect her to remain loyal to the company that put her where she is right now, regardless of what she did to screw it up, but it just worked for me to help me realize that the reason why I umped ship was the AKB lyrics and nothing else.

    Thanks for commenting! 😀

But.. AKB is always adding new, younger members from Research Students and they`ve recently started graduating older members to SDN48, haven`t they?

I think replacing younger idols with new fresh faces is just sort of a fact of idol life.

  16. Comment by RSL on January 20, 2010 6:29 pm

    @celestia

But the lyrics/mood hasn’t really gotten younger, just the girls.

  17. Comment by Ami on January 21, 2010 3:53 pm

I can completely relate to this! something about H!P has lost its sparkle for me over the years and I’ve found myself slowly swaying over to AKB, AKBs songs are just much better quality now, the dances are better just everything is better nowadays really. I feel like theres some effort and money going into making AKB48 good but I just feel that H!P is cheap and kinda naff nowadays, almost like its time has passed…sad really but maybe this is just me growing up too?

  18. Comment by Cat on January 22, 2010 6:00 pm

@Celestia: You’re totally right. I think that when my favorite AKB member graduates I won’t care about them at all. It’s a fact that the shelf life of idols is really short, and of course, audiences want new stuff too. I understand this completely, and that’s why I said in my post that I might’ve given up on H!P fandom for the most part, but I still listen to the older songs they made, the ones that made me a fan, I don’t think that’ll change. And of course, I don’t really like the direction AKB is going, singles-wise, it’s become too bubblegum pop to my liking, but as long as they have the stages, it’s all cool for me, I can still get my fix of emo and pervy songs XD

I’d say my AKB fandom has been decresing by bits too as their popularity has risen. I mean, the new frontgirls don’t appeal to me nearly as much, and they’re becoming standard idols. It’s not a fact that shocks me, I know that it’s simply that idols are a fad, and they go away easily. *shrugs* Like I say, the reason I have to like AKB it’s their lyrics, more than any other fact, so, it’s simply my biased opinion on this matter.

And also, @everyone else, please don’t get the impression that this post is for the sake of hating on H!P. I’m not interested in that. H!P was my first idol love, and it will always remain like that. Its very sad for me to let go, and I’ll admit that there are girls in there that I don’t particularly like (Koharu and AIka come to mind) but I don’t think that H!P is bad, or that AKB is better or anything of that sort. I’ve said it from the start of this blog and I’ll maintain it all the time, AKB and H!P are different types of groups, doing a different kind of thing to appeal to different audiences. And that’s cool. We should all be cool with it. Really, I didn’t mean to fuel an internet war with this post (or any of mine), I was just happy that I finally realized the reason why I jumped ship. It’s not meant as anything else. I really felt like clearing that out…

  19. Comment by akk on January 23, 2010 6:20 pm

i’m probably biased, since i was never an H!P fan
i think she was probably frustrated with all the scrutiny she always faces (if aya hirano has taught me anything, it’s that the media is relentless in their pursuit of scandals)
i don’t think less of her for her comments, a lot of people take things out on convenient targets when things aren’t going well
however if she enjoys unsubstantiated attacks at other groups i feel sorry for her
the lyrics are geared towards different sorts of people
most of my favourite members have already graduated, but the songs keep me listening to AKB48 (although i’m not as ardent in my following as before)

  20. Comment by Rm88 on January 23, 2010 7:27 pm

I don’t think it has anything to do with “growing up”. I’m 22 too, and I absolutely love Berryz Koubou and their songs about bus guides and monkeys. Fun is much more relatable to me than corny, “mature” lyrics about love problems. In fact, I bet most kids would feel songs like Seishun Bus Guide are not “cool” enough.

  21. Comment by Cat on January 23, 2010 9:30 pm

@Rim88: Yeah, I didn’t mean it as in generally growing up, because like I said in the first paragraph, there are lots of people who are older than me and who are fans of H!P, and people who are younger than me who are fans of AKB. I’m just talking about my particular case, in which I grew up and changed my taste a little bit, lyrics wise.

Corny lyrics? Absolutely. They’re everywhere, this is idol music XD But somehow, it’s that corniness what makes them appealing to me… It’s like “OMG I can’t believe they’re actually singing about that LOLZ” And no, I haven’t thought for one second that AKB’s lyrics are mature, I don’t think they are at all! Actually, most of them are about high school…

And finally, well, we all like what we like, for whatever reason it is. I still adore Minimoni’s songs, and they aren’t anything to write home about lyrics wise XD I think that’s cool.
