H!p Top Songs of 2015 Fan Poll

Welcome to the 5th annual H!p Song of the Year Fan Poll! I will be the first to admit that I only use this blog now as a home base for the annual fan poll, but rest assured that while my life has gotten quite busy with my job and planning my wedding, I am still a H!p fan and I still want to do this poll! That said, given the whole “youtube red” situation, I’d say the odds of a video coming out of it are slim. I will still happily collect and compile results for you though!

The rules are much the same as in previous years.  Below is a list of every song released by Hello! Project in 2015 which has at least been previewed by 12/2/2015. (Note: The KSS album was included in last year’s poll since it originally had a December release date, so those songs are not included). All you need to do is pick your top 10 songs, put them in order, and tell me your list. It should look something like this.

  • +10 Song Name
  • +9 Song Name
  • +8 Song Name
  • +7 Song Name
  • +6 Song Name
  • +5 Song Name
  • +4 Song Name
  • +3 Song Name
  • +2 Song Name
  • +1 Song Name

Except instead of “Song Name” fill in the song that you’d like to receive those points. The song you mark as +10 (your favorite song) will receive 10 points, the song you mark +9 will receive 9 points, etc.

There are three voting options:

1. Comment on THIS thread at Hello! Online

2. E-mail choices to hpvote2015@gmail.com (sending them this way helps the results be more of a surprise)

3. Comment in this post on my blog

PLEASE ONLY VOTE ONE TIME!!! Do not send votes to multiple places. Just pick one. I’m counting on you guys to be honest here. Fans from any country are welcome to submit votes. Votes may be submitted in English or Japanese.

Note: If Tsumetai Kaze to Kataomoi or Endless Sky are previewed in the next few days I might include them. You would be able to change your votes to include either of those songs. Otherwise, they will have to wait until next year’s poll. Same with C-ute’s new album songs other than Iron Heart.

Re-releases, covers of previous h!p songs and remixes have never counted in this poll, so any rerecorded or remixed album songs, covers in the Juice=Juice album, and “Nen ni wa Nen neniri” version are not eligible . I also do not include musical only songs (songs only released on the musical album). I do not really consider those “Hello! Project” releases since they are never performed in concert, outside of the musical, or ever used again after the musical is over. You also may NOT vote for songs by  HP associated groups that aren’t part of HP such as Lovendor or Up Up girls.

Again, please feel free to spread the word! The results will be better the more people vote. The deadline for voting is Saturday JANUARY 9th.

Covers of previous h!p songs and remixes have never counted in this poll, so the new versions of old MM singles on the “Best Updated Morning Musume” album are NOT eligible. Neither are the Juice-Juice remix versions of the indie singles, the Berryz Anata nashi 2013 version, the Momochi Yurushite Nyan remix, or “Cabbage Hakusho Hara Hen”.  However, covers of songs that are new to HP, such as “Kono Machi” are eligible. You may not vote for songs by  HP associated groups that aren’t part of HP such as Lovendor, Up Up girls, and Tasaki Asahi.

Please feel free to spread the word! The results will be better the more people vote. The deadline for voting is JANUARY 1ST. I will probably have the results video within a week.

Here are the videos form 2011 and 2012 to give you an idea of what the results will look like.

C-ute’s Time to Shine

Published by under Momusu

What brought be out of the woodwork and back to my blog this time? It’s not deleting the 999 spam comments (though I did do that); it’s C-ute’s incredible recent success!

Just watched their Shinseinaru Pentagram concert (which was also streamed live and also had GREAT costumes), and I cannot stop being impressed by these girls. So, in general, I like a lot of what AKB48 does. I have their songs on my MP3 player, I’ve been to a couple of their live shows, and I could identify every girl on the three main teams BUT one thing about AKB48 that drives me absolutely CRAZY is when fans try to excuse their near constant lipsyncing* by saying “But look at all the dancing they’re doing! There’s just no way they could do energetic dances and sing well at the same time!” Bull shit. Complete stinking bull shit. C-ute dances just as hard (and better than all the groups except maybe SKE), sings live, and still manage to sound way better than the studio recorded version of 90% of AKB members.  I’d seriously like to know what the lung capacity of the C-ute members is, because it must be off the charts to be able to pull off the live performances they do.

But you know how they got there? Lots and lots of freaking hard work and practice. With the exception of Airi, their singing was quite poor in their audition footage. And while not all of them are incredible singers now, they can all stay in tune, deliver their notes, and dance their butts off at the same time.

Now, let’s talk about the Airi factor. Not do diminish the contribution of the other C-ute members, because I believe that all are essential to the group, but is Airi not just perfect? As an idol I mean. She’s hands down the best singer in current h!p, she’s super versatile: able to pull off cute, sexy or beautiful as needed, she’s very pretty and not in a generic way, and she’s utterly charming. I mean, how can you not love Airi? She might not be the best known h!p member (I’m guessing number 3 after Sayu and Momo) but by any popularity indicator (mixi, twitter), she certainly has the most people who would call themselves her fan. I don’t think C-ute would be seeing anywhere near the success they have been if not for Airi.

C-ute’s latest single (Adam to Eve no Dillema/Kanashiki Amefuri) has blown all their previous sales records out of the water with 60,592 copies sold in week 1. While they’re quite a bit short of Morning Musume’s latest totals, they’ve pulled way ahead of Berryz which has always sort of been their sister group. I wonder if they could even challenge MM for H!p supremacy someday? I don’t exactly want that to happen since my loyalty is still to Momusu, but still, it would be exciting to see.

Outside of the main post, a few comments on the rest of the happenings in H!P.

Morning Musume- We got our first glimpse of Reina-less MM on the nice long “Ongaku no Hi” performance of Brain Storming, and overall the response has been very positive. Honestly, I didn’t even really miss Reina’s voice. I think they are going to be just fine without her, and I look forward to their new single (another double A side!) and the results of the latest audition.

Berryz Kobo- You know, Berryz just hasn’t released any songs that I liked in a long time now. Out of all the latest rash of H!P double A sides, theirs was by far my least favorite. Being so far surpassed by C-ute (who debuted after them) must sting though, so I feel a little bad for the members. More and more, I kind of wonder if Berryz has run its course and it’s time for them to go their separate ways.

S/mileage- The mix of group members still really feels “off” to me, but I did enjoy their latest singles and their album had some good songs too. I think S/mileage needs to graduate Katsuta Rina (deadweight, has the charisma of a rock), have another audition, add Hamaura Ayano and maybe one new girl. The group can definitely be saved with some tweaking!

Juice=Juice- Sad to hear about Aina’s sudden departure, but as long as Karin and Tomoko are there, I’m still super excited about this group’s potential. Samidare and Watashi ga Iu Mae ni are regular fixtures on my playlists.

*Yeah, I know that there is live singing once in a while, but you are in serious denial if you think that’s the norm. Trust me, they lipsync 99% of the time. There are some things they do very very well as an idol group, but live singing is not one of them.

Through Good Times and Bad

Published by under Momusu

These, my friends, are good times.

As someone who has been a fan of Morning Musume since “Ai Araba It’s All Right”, I entered the fandom around the time that the group began their gradual slide down the Oricon charts. Popular members were graduating left and right. Regular Oricon Number 1 positions were a thing of the past. Sales figures bounced up and down a bit, but the overall trend was lower and lower. With each new single or graduation, people would shriek “Morning Musme is dooomed! Over. Done with”. But I stuck with them. I was in Japan during most of the “Platinum Era”, what could be considered the group’s lowest point, popularity-wise, and I enjoyed every second I spent at their concerts.  Not to say I’m special, because I know that a large core group of fans stuck with them as well. For all people wailed and gnashed their teeth, sales figures were never really dismal. In fact, they were always quite good by most standards. Just not as good as they used to be. And if the downward trend continued, eventually they may have fallen into truly worrisome territory.

But then, things begun to change. The stable, and sorry to say, stale, lineup experienced some graduations. 9th gen joined, quickly followed by 10th gen, bringing fresh, young blood and new vitality to the group. Regular auditions became a feature once more. The musical style and dance performance underwent a dramatic shift, and promotion finally started to increase to keep pace better with the other top idol groups. And the sales responded to these changes in a big way. Finally, we entered an upswing! “One Two Three” became Morning Musume’s first single to break 100,000 copies sold since “Ai Araba It’s All Right” in 2004. Yes, the very song that brought me into Morning Musume. “Wakuteka Take a Chance” continued the strong sales trend, and “Help Me!” hit number 1 on the Oricon charts!

And now “Brainstorming/Kimi Sae”  has surpassed the first day sales of all three of those very successful most recent songs with 65,915 copies sold just on day one!  Amazingly, the trend is continuing in the upward direction. They’re so far ahead of the current weekly number 2 song that baring a truly epic turn-around, this will mark their first time having two consecutive weekly number one singles since “Souda! We’re Alive” and “Mr. Moonlight” in 2001/2002. That’s over ten years!

I hope that everyone involved is proud of this fantastic accomplishment. A true comeback, consisting of many songs in a row more than doubling previous sales figures, is rarely seen in this industry. Even if the group never hits another million seller, I think they have already done what many of even their most loyal fans thought was impossible. It’s been a bumpy ride, but it’s one that I’m glad to be on.

Hello! Project Songs of Spring

Published by under Momusu

I’ve seen a few cherry blossoms start blooming, and that means it’s time for Spring songs! Spring has some slightly different connotations in Japan than it does in the West. It is the season of the much beloved cherry blossoms (lord knows Japan loves their sakura) and new beginnings, yes, but it is also the season of graduation and sad partings. Even the sakura themselves only make a brief appearance before falling from the trees, serving as a poignant metaphor for the fleeting and temporary nature of all things. Still, perhaps no season is as loved and celebrated in Japan as Spring. I think “bittersweet” is the perfect word to describe it. Some of these songs reflect the sweet side, others the bitter, and others a combination of both. Enjoy!

~Celestia~

PS. You know what’s wrong with new Up Front soloist “Tasaki Asahi”‘s name? “Asahi” is a very popular brand of beer in Japan. Isn’t that kind of like naming your kid “Budweiser”?

Rolling Days

Published by under Momusu

Just as I was getting back into blogging, I was given a huge distraction in the form of Fire Emblem: Awakening for the 3DS. One of the most addicting and frustratingly challenging games I’ve ever played! You get attached to the characters, but then if one of them dies in battle they’re permanently dead. Gone! So there’s really nothing to do but turn it off and try the stage again.

Anyway, just a quick note on Tasaki Asahi (what a weird name). Have you checked her out? I’m really into her song “Rolling Days”. Now Asahi isn’t technically in Hello! Project, but she’s participating in the satoyama movement, and she performed at the h!p winter concerts. I’m hoping she’ll be officially moved over to h!p, and I’d welcome her with open arms. She’s like a much more talented version of Mano Erina, though she looks like a mix of Dawa and Eripon. Here she is performing.
