Xin, the only high-tech form of payment that's commonly seen are refillable train/subway/bus cards, and even those typically only work at shops and vending machines near the stations. I think PASMO and Suica are completely integrated in the Kantou region now, and will also work in Kyoto and Osaka.

JALPAK even had a special-edition Suica card printed up for one of their tour packages, so foreign tourists could get around Tokyo without learning to use the ticket machines.

As far as carrying cash around, I'm used to having lots of bills in my wallet, but it took me a while to get used to having a pocket full of $5 coins.

I mean most places don't take credit cards at all, foreign or not. Yes, most transactions in Japan are cash based, and people tend to carry a lot of cash around on them. Places like hotels or fancy restaurants will probably take credit cards, but your local convenience store or book shop probably doesn't.

"most places in Japan don’t take credit cards"

I thought this was interesting. Do you mean they don't take foreign cards, or is everything more cash based in general? I kind of have an image in my head of Japan being a lot more hi-tech than most countries, so I just assumed credit cards or some form of electronic payment would be the standard.

I liked your post, and I hope you decide to blog about your personal concert experiences.
