Quote me in my post about 9th gen, “after Ai-chan graduates (I’m guessing next fall, once the 9th gen has settled in a bit).”

I am psychic. More on Ai-chan graduating later. We all saw it coming, but it’s still really sad. My biggest problem is the timing of the announcement. There’s been so much going on lately, and she’s not graduating for three more concert tours (MM spring, H!p summer, MM Fall). Why did they announce it so far in advance?

They probably announced it so early so it doesn’t seem like a shock. Just like, oh ok she is graduating in a year. So that means she needs to take the initiative to get the 9th gen ready for the new era of MM.

I agree with Alita. She’s been a part of H!P for 10 years, it would seem like too much to absorb just to announce it in the spring. Plus they probably want to milk her for all she’s got in terms of sales. People will probably be more eager to buy her final singles as part of Morning Musume or send her off with a #1 on the Oricon etc.

Why announce it so soon after introducing the 9th-gen members? IMHO, to raise the stakes and soften the blow. I think they’re going to use the new members to reboot the franchise, and that Fall will have three graduations, with the other two announced over the next few months. Separate graduation concerts, to maximize the revenue, and of course a nice set of photobooks and DVDs.

I expect that the agency’s PR efforts between now and then will have a strong “changing of the guard” vibe, showing the 9th gen growing into their new roles, with the help of the senior members and “surprise” visits from well-known former members.
