Graduation Songs

Published by celestia under Ayaya, Momusu, berryz, top lists

My recent graduation has me feeling thankful to be a h!p fan. There just aren’t many American songs that are suitable for musing on graduation. There’s that Vitamin C thing from forever ago, and I could always listen to the “doooooo dododo doo doo” graduation march over and over again, but thanks to h!p’s frequent graduations, I have lots of songs that are well suited to a graduation state of mind. Here’s my top 6. Mostly MM, but they have the most graduating going on, so that makes sense. They’re not all songs that have been used to for graduations, but there are some other songs that just seemed appropriate.

6. Hey! Mirai- MM- Future-focused songs are always good for graduation. This one is all about dreams for your future life. It’s fitting for the graduate who isn’t quite sure where they’re heading next and needs some encouragement. Lyric Sample: Hey! Kono machi wa. Watashitachi o sodatete. Hey! Kono saki wa. Watashitachi ga tsukuru mirai. Translation: Hey! This town is the place that raised us. Hey! Right before us is the future that we’re going to make.
5. Hyacinth- Ayaya- Pretty song right? It expresses appreciation for the people who supported you, now that it’s time for you to set out on your own. Appreciation for the people who helped you get there is an important thing to remember at graduation-time. Lyric Sample: Arigatou. Watashi ga itsuka watarashi rashii kaze ni naru. Arigatou anata ga kureta subete ni arigatou. Translation: Thank you. One day I will become my own wind. Thank you for everything you gave me.

4. I Wish- MM- It’s the graduation song, right? This song is so very hopeful. The message, “there are both good times and bad in life, but overall, life is wonderful!” is just what a new graduate needs to hear. Lyric Sample: Hare no hi ga aru kara. Sono uchi ame mo furu. Subete itsuka nattoku dekiru sa! Jinsei tte subarashii. Translation: Because there are sunny days, there are rainy days too. Someday, you’ll understand it all. Life is wonderful.

3. Never Forget- MM- This is one of MM’s songs that’s tailor-made for graduation. The lyrics are about reminiscing about the past with friends while you reluctantly say goodbye. I know I’ll never forget my time in college and the people I met there. Lyric Sample: Wasurenai wa anata no koto. Zutto soba ni itai kedo nee shikata nai yo ne. aa nakidashisou. Translation: I’ll never forget you. I want to stay by your side always, but I guess there’s nothing I can do. Aa, it seems that I’m starting to cry.

2. ByeBye Matta ne- Berryz- Sometimes you want to feel optimistic and excited about where you’re going. Sometimes you want to cry your heart out over leaving where you have been. This is the song for that second occasion. Saying goodbye to my best friends, quite possibly never to see them again, is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. The lyrics and the tone of this song express that feeling perfectly. Lyric Sample: Bye Bye kyou to iu suteki na jikan. Bye Bye watashi na zeitaku na anata to no jikan. Translation: Bye bye. Today was really a wonderful time. Bye bye. The time I spent with you was precious.

1. Aruiteru-MM, Maybe a surprising choice for number 1? I swear though, this one is just waiting to be someone’s graduation song. Maybe Sayumi’s. She seems rather attached to it. I like the image of “walking forward into the unknown future”. There’s the feeling that we’ve got to keep walking, keep progressing. It’s encouraging, especially since the song reminds us that we’re not alone. Lyric Sample: Aruiteru. Sono saki no sora he. Mada minu mirai he. Translation: Walking. Towards that sky ahead. Towards the future we cannot yet see.

To the future! Cheers,

Bring some Tissues

Published by celestia under Momusu, berryz, top lists, video

I think I’m going to do more cross-posting, and by that I mean writing things that apply to both Hello Projects and Johnny’s. Such entries will be posted in one blog and linked in the other. It may well be that only the 4 or so people who read my blogs and are fans of both will enjoy these kinds of posts, but I’ve just been itching to make them, so here we go. This is posted in Bikkuri because three out of my five choices come from h!p

Here we have the top 5 idol performances that make me cry. There are only 5 of them because I don’t cry from watching things very easily. Feel sad, sure, but rarely do I actually cry. These five performances are the exception to that rule. Why do people enjoy watching things that make us cry? Maybe because it’s kind of cathartic? I know that any music or video that really makes me feel something, good or bad, is an instant winner with me. Anyway, if you are in a crying sort of mood, then this is the post for you!

5. Jin, Care, TV performance

For the first half of the song I’m fine, but after he pushes up his sunglasses and you can see his eyes, he just looks so sad, and desperate, and really really beautiful. I think I’m overly sensitive to Jin looking sad, with his eyes all glistenly like that. Don’t be sad JinJin!!!! His singing also becomes more and more emotional as he goes, from almost flat affect to seriously struggling to keep it together. I know this song (which he has named as his favorite song to sing because it’s his song) means a lot to him.

4. Morning Musume, Dekkai Uchuu ni Ai ga Aru, 24 hour Terebi

If you’re not familiar with the story, that guy’s daughter (the one in the pictures in the background) died in a traffic accident, and Dekkai Uchuu was her favorite song. The contrast between the happy, hopeful song and the crying father with all the cute pictures really tugs at the old heartstrings, even though the sadness isn’t focused on Morning Musume themselves. I don’t know how they stayed so composed while singing this.

3. 5th gen, Sukina Sempai, Konno’s Graduation Concert

I already posted this one as my #1 most sad Morning Musume moment a while ago, so I’m not going to write a whole lot about it, but what do you know, it’s still really sad. It’s 5th gen and it’s their song, they’re singing it together for the last time, and we all know that 5th gen is full of cry babies anyway.

2. ByeBye Mata ne, Berryz, Maiha’s Graduation

Reminds me of every friend I’ve ever parted ways with. The Berryz suddenly stop looking like idols to me and start looking like exactly what they are, really sad, crying little girls who are saying goodbye to someone that they love. I want to hug all of them, give them cookies, and tell them it’ll all be okay.

1. Nino, Konseki, Iza Now tour

Online Videos by Veoh.com

Now this is damn sad, not to mention some of the best singing I’ve ever heard from dear Nino. I love it, but I kind of hate it at the same time, because I can’t stand to see Nino looking so pained. The translation can be found in the description of the youtube clip I embedded here, and I’ve retyped it up below. I’d highly recommend reading it because knowing what the lyrics mean makes it at least ten times more tear inducing. Combine pathetically touching lyrics with Nino’s fabulous emoting/acting skills, and I’m practically sobbing. He wrote it himself, and you can see lots of tears in his eyes when the song ends. It’s an unusual thing because Nino is not one of the crybabies of Arashi *coughaibacough*. Isn’t this just beautiful?

Lingering, Lingering

After the early summer rain, the undried remains of tears

Unerasable, Unerasable

My beloved’s shadow floats in the dark night

Walking along the banks at sunset with you together

We lead each other along with our smiles

What shall we have for dinner today?

Such a small and humble happiness

Though you have died, you live within my heart

I could love someone else, but there is no one but you

No matter how many seasons I struggle through

I’m afraid of letting go, of letting it dissapear

I gaze at violets

What a pretty flower

But I know that someday they will wilt

It is evening

If I think of the crimson waters, there remains the two of us on the liquid’s surface

Shadows heap on top of each other

I’m afraid of being alone

Realizing too late that there is only one person on the liquid’s surface

The seed planted in my heart that day

Buds sprouted after

In appearance and form it is different

But my love is unchanged, the gentle light

Sniffle,

Top 10 Lists: Momusu Lines

Published by celestia under Momusu, top lists

I’ve decided to take a break from the zomgimagerush! and introduce a new feature.

Since the completion of my top list of Hello Project singles, I’ve been feeling rather, well, listless (pun intended). I find something strangely satisfying about making lists (type A much?) so, I’ve decided to think smaller and move to lists of favorite lines. As it turns out, there are considerably more lines in h!p than there are songs, so it’s exactly the kind of daunting task that I enjoy. For this first installment, I’ve decided to focus only on Morning Musume A-sides, and really limit myself to single lines rather than entire phrases of music, though I’m ashamed to admit that I couldn’t keep it to only 10. This is a rather unlucky top 13 list with choices ranging from beautiful and touching lines to stupid lines that just make me laugh.

13. Chou chou chou chou ii kanji, Very very very very good feelings, Renai Revolution 21:
Morning Musume’s battle cry. I often find myself chanting it for no reason. You might be sick of hearing it, but you can’t deny that it’s one of MM’s most memorable lines.

12. Goodbye, Memory Seishun no Hikari:
Just the last goodbye, that’s kind of like goodbyeeeee aiiii ahahaaaha. Oh fizzle. You know the one I’m talking about right? Those harmonizations get me every time.

11.Sou ikite iru, Souda! We’re Alive:
Risa, in all of her pig-tailed glory, attacks this line with such incredible zeal that no matter how much more mature her looks or singing become, I will never be able to get that image of her out of my head.

10.Homosapiens, The Manpower:
That song is so much crack, but I love it. That word is just thrown in there with no connection to the lyrics preceding it too. Bam! homosapiens out of nowhere! Engrish is best when it’s said in a very serious and emphatic way, so I very much enjoy watching Rika Ishikawa give her best fierce/sexy look to the camera and sing, “homo sapienzu”.

9.Break Through jibun wo Buchiyabure (ai-chan version) Break through, break through from yourself, Koko ni Iruzee:
Ai-chan at her best. There were some very good singers in the group when Koko ni Iruzee was released, but Ai-chan somehow outshines all of them here.

8.Konbini ga suki HAHAHAHA I love convenience stores, THE PEACE:
Tsunku works a random shout-out to his favorite purveyor of cheap food into a song, and all I can think is “Convenience stores, hell yeah!”

7.Sexy Island, Iroppoi Jirettai:
It’s repeated so many times with so much emphasis throughout the song, and it amuses me every time. Oh yes, our Momusu are indeed islands of sexy in a sea of sketchy wota. Did anyone pick this song as the one to take with them to the deserted island in that cell phone poll posted at Hello Online? If you’re going to be stranded on a deserted island, might as well make it a sexy island, right?

6.Enka mo Meccha Umai Hito, He’s also really good at enka, Go girl koi no victory:
Am I mistaken in my assumption that “mad enka skillz” aren’t the first thing a Japanese girl looks for in a boyfriend?

5.(Watashi no) rankingu (nani darou ka)? What could my ranking be?, Shabondama:
When I watch old performances of Shabondama the line I most look forward to is this one of Tsuji Nozomi’s. I swear she tries to sing it as awesomely bad as possible. Usually she looks like she’s having a pretty hard time keeping a straight face. The one major flaw in the Bonkyu Shabondama performance is that Ai-chan simply cannot do this line justice. She tries to sing it well, but that’s just not how it’s meant to be.

4.Sou sa minna-san, it’s all right! That’s right everyone! It’s all right!, Ai Araba It’s All Right:
If anyone can convince me that It’s All Right, Yossie can! She wasn’t always MM’s strongest dancer or singer, but she brought so much spirit to the stage, and she was perfect doing lines like this one

3.BAKA ne BAKA ne BAKA ne! You idiot! You idiot! You idiot!, Onna ni Sachi Are:
Has Morning Musume ever been quite this angry? I can just see Sayumi in particular beating some poor sap over the head with a heart-shaped pillow while screaming this at him. 6th gen are the cutest man-haters ever.

2.Ah, ame ga yanda. Ah, anata wa konai, Ah, the rain has stopped. Ah, you didn’t come, As for One Day:
The best way I can describe this part is haunting. Rika does a beautiful job with these lines, perfectly evoking a sort of empty, resigned, hopelessness. It turns a pretty good, if not particularly memorable song (imho) into one that sticks with you and leaves you with a strong lingering emotion. Who would have thought that Rika Iskikawa would be the one to make me love a song?

1.Demo egao wa, taisetsu ni shitai (aisuru hito no tame ni ), but I want to keep my smile precious for the one I love, I Wish:
The famous Aibon line from I Wish. No surprises here right? Perhaps the ultimate ‘chills down your spine’ moment for MM, turned bitter-sweet since we know what became of little Kago Ai. Still, the sentimental side of me can’t help but feel that a part of Aibon, in all her child-like innocence, is forever frozen in that one lovely, quavering note that captured the hearts of countless fans.

I am a Sheep

Published by celestia under Momusu, berryz, c-ute, eye candy, top lists

So I’m joining the crowd and posting my results from the Hello!Blog poll. No need to read this, I just thought the images were pretty. It seems my tastes have changed somewhat since I first posted my preferences. Interesting how that happens.

Bottom 10

I have listed my very favorite Hello Project songs, so now what’s left for me to do but list my very least favorite? Look forward to seeing my most mediocre h!p songs in the next post! Just kidding on that one (maybe). Did you know that ‘mediocre’ is a rather difficult word to spell? Thank God for spell checkers. Anyway, there are quite a few h!p songs that are bad by virtue of being boring, but I listen to those songs once and then forget about them. The songs on this list are the ones that are either performed often enough that I can’t ignore them or so very bad that I cannot forget about them. Oh, and don’t freak out because I hate your favorite song, okay?

10. Dschingis Khan, Berryz- I haven’t seen the PV yet, so I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt and putting it at the least worst spot on this list. The song just really makes me cry for the Berryz. Some stupid old European song about a bloodthirsty warlord sung in a range that is far too high for them? It’s a mean joke being played on Berryz Koubou, that’s what it is, and I won’t stand for it!

9.Yeah! Meccha Holiday, Matsuura Aya- It goes on far too long with the “Yeah! Meccha..” lines and every time I hear that line, I’m less enthusiastic about it. It goes like this “Yeah!” “Yeah.” “Meh.” “Okay, knock it off already!” Maybe it’s not really Ayaya’s fault though. It might be all of the bad renditions of this song that have been done by other h!p members.

8.Aoi Sportscar no Otoko, Aoiro 7- I enjoy the “dame dame” part because it was used for the Hello Morning karaoke segments, and I loved those. I don’t like the song though because it’s rather tuneless. The chorus doesn’t even really have a melody. I don’t know how, or why, you would have a chorus without a discernable melody.

7.Dance and Chance, Coconuts Musume- What annoys me here is not the sound of the song, but that it’s full of really really lame English. Lyrics like that would get laughed at in America, and it makes me sad that some poor Japanese people might have been tricked into thinking they were cool. I blame Coconuts Musume as they knew full well how bad those lyrics were and yet they did nothing to stop this.

6. Hyoukkori Hyoutanjima, Morning Musume- Mari’s speech at the beginning of this single is engrish that I can get behind. Unfortunately, my appreciation for the song ends there. I don’t know why Morning Musume suddenly felt the need to release a song aimed at pre-schoolers, but I hope that they never do it again. I don’t even like facial hair on men.

5. Acchi Chikyuu wo Samasunda, Economi- Taking two of the very worst singers in h!p and having them “sing” a song together. Didn’t really think that through, did you Tsunku? “Sing” is in quotes because there’s not much actual singing, is there? Mostly it’s just talking. If I wanted to listen to a recording of people talking, I’d buy a book on tape.

4. Gag 100kaiban Aishitekudasai, Berryz- Don’t laugh, but I feel like this song is mocking me, I really do. The whole “sukinanda” part is done is this cutesy sing-songy voice that makes me feel like they’re repeating something I just said in a super-mocking way. “shuki nyaaan da shuki nyaaan da…” I wish I could gag them every time they go into that part. Hahahaha. I suddenly feel a bit better about the song.

3. Namida Tomaranai Houkago, Morning Musume- If you can stay awake long enough to notice, there are many things wrong with this song beyond how very very boring it is. Three of the four leads are KonKon (bless her heart), Sayu, and Rika (add Koharu, and you’ve got the 4 worse singers MM has ever seen). Worse, almost no one else sings at all, and several of the girls are wearing horrible shiny leisure suits for no apparent reason. Finally, the song is so utterly saccharine that it makes me feel a bit ill. KonKon singing, “My tears won’t stop… because I’m just too happy!” Bleeeeech.

2. Happy, Koharu- The short explanation is that listening to this song causes me to become violent. For the longer explanation: http://celestia-414.livejournal.com/17998.html#cutid2

1.Konnichi Pa, Kirari Kusumi- If worse songs than this exist in the world, I no longer want to be a part of it. Check the link above for further explanation.

Amen,

Top 20 List for ALL h!p songs!

Published by celestia under Ayaya, Momusu, berryz, c-ute, top lists

Usually I try to space out posts in the same ‘series’ but I’m too excited about having finished this to wait. I realize that anyone reading this is probably significantly less excited about the completion of my top 20 list of h!p songs than I am, but I get some kind of weird satisfaction from composing well thought-out lists, so I’m pretty proud of myself. It’s the science major thing again. Yay for organizing data!!

First, links to the past posts in this series. If you are looking for explanation as to why I’ve chosen a particular song, check the appropriate link.

Whew. Yeah, there’s a lot of Morning Musume in there, but there’s a reason they’re my favorite. If I was any good at image-making I would make myself some kind of image of congratulations, but I might just be the most tec
hnologically incompetent blogger out there, hence the live journal rather than self-created blog. Instead, a totally unedited but still nice image of a couple of my favorite girls to cap off the entry.

Top 2 Lists: Maki, VUDen, and Gumi’s

Published by celestia under Maki, Momusu, VUDen, top lists

Man, I’m in a good mood today. I just got back from renting a cabin at the mountain for the weekend with my boyfriend and another couple, and it was just the sort of break from school that I needed. There was lots of snow! When I got back, I watched Buono’s new PV, and it really made me smile. I was impressed by how good all three girls looked. Finally, I realized that I am almost done with making my top lists of h!p songs by groups, so soon I will be able to compose the list of my favorites out of all of h!p, which is something I’ve been working up to for a while. Today I’m going to finish off my ‘by groups’ lists with the Morning Musume ‘gumi’ groups, Maki Goto, and VUDen.

Maki Goto- You might be surprised that she only is on a top 1-2 list instead of a top 5 or even 10 given all the solo material she has produced. The reason really comes down to my personal preference for groups over soloists. I like seeing the group interactions and how their personalities and voices come together. Also, more effort and planning seems to go into h!p’s groups than their soloists. H!P solo work (with the notable exception of early Matsuura Aya) doesn’t tend to interest me much.

2. Suppin no Namida- It’s a theme song for a drama, and it certainly sounds like it. With ballads either they really get to me or, more often, I get bored before I’m halfway through the song . There’s really no in between. This happens to be one of the ones that gets to me. You can tell that there’s a story behind it, and it shows in the emotion that she puts into her voice.

1. Sukisugite Baka Mitai (Goto version)- Oh that’s where this song ended up! Yeah, it’s a great song, but I picked the Maki version over the original for one important reason… Rika Ishikawa. It’s not that I don’t like Rika, she has her place, but that place is not alongside three of the strongest singers in h!p. Her voice sticks out like a sore thumb, and quite frankly, ruins the song for me. Of the individual versions, I like Maki’s the best because she can portray the attitude of the song a bit better than Aya or Nacchi. See what I mean about solo songs? My favorite song of Maki’s is technically a group song anyway.

Otome/Sakura Gumi- I actually really like all of the Gumi songs, but I’m only allowing myself to pick my top 2.

2. Sakura Mankai- This song might just have my favorite PV out of all of Hello Project. It’s just so pretty! The song is also very pretty, and it’s one of the few h!p songs that incorporates the traditional Japanese feel without sounding forced and annoying me. I love it when they whip out their fans.

1. Ai no Sono~ Touch my Heart!~ Originally I was a bit turned off by the strange English (hey every time I’m so proud of you?) but I quickly got over that and now happily perform the hand motions every time that part plays. Now this is the right use for a Rika Ishikawa. Her “bye bye” lines are quite nice. This song is really a lot of fun.

VUDen- So they broke up huh? I swear, every time I leave something happens. I go to Florida for Spring Break and they add Chinese members to Morning Musume. I visit my brother in college and Maki quits. I go up to the mountain and VUDen disbands. For my two cents on the matter… meh… another wrong use of a Rika. She was never meant to front a group. I’m surprised they lasted as long as they did.

2. Koi no Nukegara- Uh… this song only makes the list because I really like the music at the beginning. Their voices are whiny and annoying… I just really like that intro, okay?!?

1. Koi suru Angel Heart- This one is a really cute song. The girls aren’t trying to be overly sexy, and it’s got a nice catchy melody. I think another group probably could have sung it better though since Rika’s voice goes pretty thin on the high notes, but at least they put a lot of spirit into it I guess.

Woo! I’m done! I’m going to try to compose my master list now. I can’t wait to find out which songs I like best. I’ve always wondered about that. Lol. Not sure how this post ended up so Rika focused though. Even Maki’s section was full of Rika, huh?

the other reason I’m in a good mood is that the new KT pv is out, and it’s so freaking hot… Jin’s little smirk at the end..*dies*

Top 5 List: Shuffle Groups

Published by celestia under top lists

Today’s post is my top 5 shuffle group songs. I’m including both the official summer shuffles and oneshot groups that contain/contained members who are not normally in the same group. By the way, I have a good reason for not including “Susisugite Bakamitai” on this list. Don’t worry. All will be revealed to you in time.

5. “Shiawase desu ka?” Sexy8

First of all, does anyone know if there is some natural connection between the word “sexy” and the number “8″ in Japan? Morning Musume’s latest album is “Sexy8Beat”, this group is called Sexy8… do I detect a pattern? Anyway, at first listen, this song didn’t excite me much. It’s kind of low key, Mari looked silly with those hair extensions, and Yossie looked weird and uncomfortable in her dress. As I listened to it more though, I begun to realize that the song really is as sexy as the group name implies. Rika is adorable on her hopeful “Shiawase?” Mari “sexy beam” Yaguchi’s eyes are entrancing, and Ayaka is really smexing it up on the dance moves. The PV is nice, with the girls fading in and out, the rain, and Maki looking oh so tragic in the window. Also, it turns out that this is a solid, well-sung single that doesn’t become annoying with time (unlike many of the other summer shuffle songs).

4. “Shall we Love” Gomattou

Put when you put Hello Project’s three strongest singers all in one group, how can you not win? Making the cover look like the group should really be called “Maki and her ho’s” is just a bonus. Needless to say, all three girl’s vocal talents really shine on this track. Performed by lesser singers, it might have bored me, but as is, I can’t help but be impressed. I particularly like how they overlap a bit as one girl ends her verse with the high “da yo da yo woooh” line while the next girl picks up the melody.

3. “Kowarenai Ai ga Hoshii no” 7Air

Kon kon kon! Yo yo yo! I’ve got to say, I object to the idea of half of the group being labled “sexy” and the other half being labled “not”, but having half of the group sing and the other half accompany on the konkons (lol) does make it a fairly unique song for h!p. I enjoy having the girls themselves doing some of the backing vocals because it cuts down on the amount of creepy Tsunku lines. The rap is one of the better ones to come from h!p (though nothing can beat Do it Now’s rap), and melody lines are catchy as well. Also, Risa was in this group <3.

2. “All for One and One for All” HP All Stars

I’m so glad that they made this song. We’ve seen all of Hello Project in concert, but I believe that this is the first and only time that they have released a collective single. The beginning, with members getting lines in the order that they joined, is genius. It’s like the entire history of Hello Project all laid out in one song. As for the song itself, it’s good and genki, but I really like the single more for its set-up than its melody.

1. “First Kiss” Aa

Why oh why do I love angsty-sounding shuffle songs? Really, number 2 is the only one that isn’t full of plaintive angst-filled singing. Ah well. Let’s end this one saying that I LOVE this song. Little Reina leads the way, and her voice is perfect for the song, but it’s tiny doll-like, 9 year old Airi Suzuki who completely steals the show. For everything that Airi has accomplished so far with C-ute, I will probably always consider “First Kiss” to be the highlight of her career. Her voice drifts into that super-high range seemingly effortlessly, and she looks so adorably serious that I just want to run out there and give her a lollypop or something to snap her out of it. This is the song that made me, and countless others, fall head over heels in love with Airi Suzuki, and it’s probably the reason that she remains the face of C-ute today. Oh, and there was some other girl in the group, but did anyone even really notice her?*

As my final note, some of the things I’m looking forward to in early 2008.

Buono’s new single. I really like it.

The arrival of my copy of Morning Musume’s latest concert tour DVD

Watching Jun, Lin, Eri, and Maasa jumping around like crazy and Ai~ning it up in the most recent Wonderful Hearts concert

The Cute vs Berryz concert. A joint concert with these two groups pretty much had to happen, but making it a “battle” concert was a delightful surprise. I think that pushing the rivalry between these groups would do them both some good.

*I joke. I know that Miyabi was the other member of Aa! You’ll have to admit, for a group with only 3 members, she really didn’t do much, though I doubt that was any fault of her own.

Berryz Kobou Top 5 Songs

Published by celestia under berryz, top lists

I’ve looked at the future of the h!p kids, not it’s time to look at the past. That meansit’s Berryz Kobou’s turn to have me list their top 5 songs. Hora!

5.Anata Nashide wa Sekite Yukenai-

I have a very bad reason for picking this song for my list. I really really like the background music/vocals. The “what a night” parts, and especially the part between the verses and the bridge. That, “da dadada dadada dadada” part. That is an absolutely terrible description, and if anyone understands the part I’m trying to reference, you get a virtual Christmas cookie. Anyway, since this is Berryz first single, their inexperience shows in their vocals, and it does seem like an odd choice to have girls that young singing this kind of song as their debut, but every time I’m about to write off the song as a bad job, those background hooks pull me back in. Go Tsunku, I guess.

4.Kohaku Funsui no Hiroba

From Berryz first single to one of their most recent, and my how far they have come with their vocals. A ballad that gets stuck in my head. That’s something new. It needs more Chinami, but the style of the chorus, with the top 4 switching off at each line is particularly appealing. It almost sounds like a conversation going on between them with one girl asking something and the next one replying. Easily my favorite Berryz song of 2007.

3.Special Generation

SU-PE-SHA-RU GENERATION! Were you wondering where this one would show up? There’s a reason that we see this song over and over again at concerts. It plays really well to a live crowd with that opening, all of the “oi!”s, and its great dance beat. This song represented a big step up for the Berryz. In a similar manner to Cute’s latest single, one great song was all it took to make people start paying attention and taking them seriously as a group. With this single they announced, “We’re not just Morning Musume’s cute little backdancers anymore”. Speaking of dances, this song has an awesome one, and I love how that little swirly move at the very beginning as become iconic for the Berryz. As a final note, major props to LinLin for doing so well with Risako’s lines in this at the newcomers concert.

2.Koshi Teru Toshi Haitsumo

Here’s a first, a song’s A-side and B-side both making the list. It seems like all too often, if a single is great, it’s B side is probably going to suck. It’s like too much of Tsunku’s talent went into the A-side, and there just wasn’t any left for the coupling track. That’s not the case with Special Generation and its coupling track, Koshi Teru Toshi Haitsumo. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again, I am a complete sucker for the younger girls doing super-high falsetto singing. Since this song is full of it, I was bound to love it. Also, you can really hear the feeling that the girls are putting into their voices, and there are a lot of lines from the girls we don’t hear from very much. I should point out that the quality of the song does not suffer as a result. This song is a fitting coupling track for Berryz defining single, further cementing that Berryz are not a novelty group, but a musical force to be reckoned with.

1.Munasawagi Scarlet

This song magically went from something I didn’t even like to my absolute favorite Berryz song. I think it took me a while to ‘get’ the style of it, but once I did, it was love. The guitar is awesome, the singing is awesome, the little curtsies in the dance are awesome, and yes, the Risako is awesome too. No one can do that, “mmm yes my love” hook like her with a perfect combination of child-like poutyness and saucy sexuality. I also really like the costumes because they’re pink and red and blue. Berry colors on the Berryz at last!

As a special bonus, here’s how I currently rank the h!p kids. I may get around to explaining this someday.

Mi-nimoni Fa-vo-rite song ranking ing ing

Published by celestia under top lists

Don doka don doka don doka don YAY!!! Minimoni post desuuuuuuuuu~~~

Today’s edition of Top 5 Song ranking is all about that plaid-loving, cake eating, ever-pyoning group of shorties known as Minimoni.

5. Mini Strawberry Pie- One of Minimoni’s many “gets stuck in your head” forever songs. I’m not sure how good strawberry pie tastes, but I am comforted by the inclusion of apple later on. The song’s as sickly sweet as it sounds, but it is 100% completely Minimoni, and I love the little “junjunjunjun” sections (JunJun should totally sing this song!). The PV features lots of the girls’ cute animated alter egos. My favorite animated mini is Tsuji with her little fangs. It’s also interesting to consider that, technically, a lot of the lyrics are in English, even if it is only 3 words of English: strawberry, apple, and pie.

4. Okashi Tsukutte Okasuii- Is this post making you crave sweets yet? This unusual song from the Minimoni movie explores the deeper reasons behind the phenomenon of cake possessing qualities of shyness. The results are inconclusive: okasuii (it’s strange), but surprisingly, the song does have some attitude to it, especially the verses. Every single section is catchy and memorable, so its hard for me to pick a favorite part. I do know my favorite part of the PV though: the very very end when Tsuji pops up and whispers “okashi” with such relish. The expression on her face is priceless.

3. Minimoni Jankenpyon!- It would be a crime to leave Janken off of this list, but you probably know all about this song, so instead of a review, a story may it please you. I was at work (I tutor Japanese exchange students), and a girl came in who was planning to visit a local elementary school and teach some Japanese games to the kids. I was helping her put the instructions into English, and one of the games involved handing the kids a red flag and a white flag and playing a bit of a game of “simon says” telling them to raise or lower a certain color. Do you know where I’m going with this yet? If you didn’t know, Japanese for ‘raise white’ is ‘shiro agete’. Similarly, ‘raise red’ is ‘aka agete’. I begun subconsciously humming Jankenpyon without really knowing why, when suddenly light bulbs flashed, trumpets sounded, and fireworks were launched! The verses of the song and the strange accompanying dance! It’s referring to this game, one that every kid in Japan would probably have played! It isn’t as purely random as I thought it was!!! (Please don’t tell me that I am the only living h!p fan who didn’t already know this. That might make me sad).

2. Genki Jirushi no Oomori- I swear I’m not obsessed with the Minimoni movie. I just happen to really enjoy the songs from it is all. This song nearly topped my “songs that get stuck in my head” list, but my strong affection for it is really hard to explain. Sure it’s extremely catchy, but it has something that goes beyond that. Something that makes me find myself singing it all the time for no apparent reason. Something that puts a big goofy smile on my face whenever my mp3 player decides to play it. Maybe if I listen to it a few thousand times more I will understand what it is about this song. It’s the Momoko Tsunaga of songs for me since I find myself equally inexplicably fascinated with her. I do wish we got concert renditions of this song. Is it because the monologues are related to the movie?, because you could modify those you know!

1. Crazy About You- I know that it compl
etely betrays the spirit of Minimoni (Seriousness? Mika wearing an outfit that matches everybody else!?! Unthinkable!), but I can’t help it. I really like the song. Please don’t hate me. Were it sung by any group other than Minimoni, I think that more other people would love it too. If you demand humor in your Minimoni songs, look no further than Takitty trying to pronounce, “No no can’t hurry love. You’re the love of my life”. I will never understand why they didn’t just give that line to Mika, because Ai mangles those words. Going back to the positives, this song has the strongest vocal performances out of all the Minimoni songs, reminding us that although they often sing in cutesy high-pitched voices, all of four of those girls really are talented singers. Since I’m always interested in dances, I should mention that I’m a big fan of this one. The moves for the chorus are just perfect, and the “for you” lines accompanied by the heart beam move ismy favorite part of the song both vocally and dance-wise. So yeah. You now know my secret shame. My favorite Minimoni song is the least Minimoni of them all.

Unrelated note time! I was thinking, we should have h!p “blog of the year” awards. There could be catergories like most creative, best eyecandy, most informative, most thought provoking, funniest, and best overall. Everyone could vote! Wouldn’t that be fun? No, I’m not suggesting that I deserve to win any of these awards (because I really don’t think I do), but it would be a nice way for people who are putting a lot of effort into their blogs to get some formal recognition. There are some problems though. Someone would have to pick the nominees, and I don’t know if anyone is objective enough, I don’t know if people would actually vote, and it would take some work to set it up. Ah well. It’s an interesting thought though, isn’t it?
