Happy New Year for serious, folks.

So here’s the deal. During the Christmas break, us local cousins love to show our out-of-town cousins how we roll. We had an outing that consisted of a dinner of wings and beer then proceeded to go bowling. In the car I happened to be in, containing 3 other cousins and myself, two of us had a sudden urge to listen to Katy Perry’s Hot N Cold. We don’t know why. We just wanted to… but none of us had her CD handy and the radio wasn’t cooperating. Our appetite for Hot N Cold wasn’t satisfied. Upon returning home, I <s>downloaded</s> acquired her album and didn’t really listen to anything except Hot N Cold. Throughout the rest of my out-of-town cousin’s visit, I whored that song like I would anything from Perfume. The cousins and I noticed that Katy likes to emphasize the “You” during the chorus and I was reminded of Crank Than by Soulja Boy. We thought it would be hilarious if someone made a remix… which I did as soon as they left.

I managed to find a good studio vocal rip from the magic that is the interwebs and I kinda went crazy for a night. I started mixing Hot N Cold with songs of all sorts of genres and came out with these four tracks below:

Katy Perry vs. Soulja Boy - Hot N Cold (Crank That Remix)
Katy Perry vs. DJ Hazard & Distorted Minds - Mr. Hot N Cold
(Mr. Happy meets Hot N Cold in Drum and Bass style)
Katy Perry vs. Ikimono-gakari - Hot N Cold Romantic
(Kimagure Romantic meets Hot N Cold in JPop style)
Katy Perry vs. Perfume - love the Hot N Cold
(love the world meets Hot N Cold in TechnoPop style)

Comment and stuff. As usual. I love hearing about how much you hate Hot N Cold after you listen to these. :3

I put the Soulja Boy mashup on YouTube but I doubt I’ll get around to putting the other ones up. Enjoy here:

Hailing from Los Angeles, California comes someone I wouldn’t know about if it wasn’t for Dieselboy’s Substance D mix. In my first podcast, I played Load Rocket (Gridlok Remix) which was originally done by Computer Club. I never really thought to check him out… until a few nights ago where I was just playing around with my sub and played the Gridlok Mix and watched my remote control shake for the lulz. I bumped into his myspace and found out he actually does electro. To that, I say awesome.

The original mix of Load Rocket is sex. I’ve been getting into electro a lot more ever since my friend introduced me to Justice (which I haven’t made a post on yet… I should really do something about that). Judging solely off Load Rocket and the remixes he has on his MySpace, his style is more bad ass compared to Justice which has more of a feel good, dance-ish, epicness to it. Computer Club’s electro is the type you’d hear at Ricer Shows with the glowstickers going off and what not. Or that’s the image I see in my head anyway. Check out his mixes on his MySpace for some good, clean electro.

Other than that, I hope to hear more from this guy.

In this post, I explore the newly posted Oricon Yearly Single and Album charts for 2008. I wonder how Perfume's doing... Also, I comment on some notable entries.

Thanks to celestia’s post about all the Johnny’s singles on the annual chart, I couldn’t help but browse the single and album charts for myself. Of course the first thing I check out is how Perfume did. I was pretty happy with the results:

Singles:
#47 love the world
#80 Dream Fighter

Albums:
#23 GAME

I’m not really surprised that GAME made it that high since it sold like crazy upon release. With the singles though, I’m kinda surprised they broke top 50. It’s definitely been a year of TechnoPop. I couldn’t be happier for the ladies.

Now that the Perfume news is out of the way, here are some shouts and special mentions for other people I listen to and made it onto the annual chart.

Singles:
#44 爪爪爪／「Ｆ」 (マキシマム　ザ　ホルモン)
Yay Maximum The Hormone! I still want to make a stepchart for this song since there are so many tempo changes and it’s just a fun song in general. Can’t recall F though. I just listened to TsumeTsumeTsume too much when it was still fresh.

Albums:
#40 - ＥＬＬＥＧＡＲＤＥＮ　ＢＥＳＴ　１９９９−２００８ (ＥＬＬＥＧＡＲＤＥＮ)
Don’t have much to say about it other than they were fun while they were around. I kinda lost track of them. Maybe I should give their best a listen…

#48 - ライフアルバム (いきものがかり)
I’m still in the process of getting into these guys thanks to reading about them in SEKUSHII ISLAND (ilu sei<3) though I've heard their name thrown about in #wotachat just never really paid attention. Their latest single, 気まぐれロマンティック, and the only song of theirs I've heard, is REALLY cute with the dance and all. Also, Kiyoe's voice is quite fun in it. Cute, without the helium, and just fun and energetic all around. The instrumental track is also up my alley for acoustic JPop, which I don't usually get into. I see myself getting more into them during the Christmas break... we'll see.

#52 - ＢＥＳＴ　ＯＦ　ＴＨＥ　ＢＥＳＴＥＳＴ (ＢＥＮＮＩＥ　Ｋ)
I've totally fallen off the BENNIE K bandwagon but I should definitely check out this BEST album since I was a fan of their older stuff.

#62 - Ａｗａｒｄ　ＳｕｐｅｒＮｏｖａ　−Ｌｏｖｅｓ　Ｂｅｓｔ− (ｍ−ｆｌｏ)
*Sigh* I wonder what's going on with these guys. love comes and goes was quite the exit track for the loves series and I miss them. Maybe I should do some research during the Christmas break...

#74 - ＴＨＥ　ＢＥＳＴ　ＣＯＬＬＡＢＯＲＡＴＩＯＮＳ (ＤＯＵＢＬＥ)
I only know of her thanks to the guys above. Her voice is awesome with all that jazz and soul. I should get into her more.

Check out the Single and Album charts at Oricon!

Anyway, what I was trying to accomplish with this mix was my desire for it to be in a technopop styling. Based on the start of the track, I thought it was going to. But no. This is me doing what I thought Tan Tan Taan would be, in my styling.

Sup.

This is kind of the result I wanted from the Husky Mix of Puppy love; my limitation was my lack of instrumental, thus not being able to produce a workable vocal track.

This remix has been pretty heavily influenced by the dubstep genre which I’ve been listening to quite a bit, especially the works of XI. I love the smooth rumbling basslines and deep kicks of the genre and wanted to give Dream Fighter the real dreamy sound that I’ve had imagined for it. The heavy use of reverb does the trick to provide the dream-like atmosphere. For some weird reason, with the Aaa~ part cut into fragments, it sounds more like a string instrument.

Anyhow, enjoy this latest mix.

Hey guys! I’ve been getting back into charting because of some new found friends and some awesome times that have been had. I’ve got a total of 7 songs and only one having a hard and expert chart. Check out the stepcharts section for the specific details but here’s the quick rundown:

Perfume - Take Me Take Me: Expert 10
Lots of hands. I made it to get down and get funky. lol. I just wanted to have more opportunities to do my cross-legged thing. I should probably tape it so I don’t have to explain it though… ugh… lol nevermind. NEXT!

High-King - Cinderella \ Complex: Hard 10
This was definitely fun to chart because of how chaotic the vocals are (using chaotic in DDR terminology). I also wanted to play around with different timing gimmicks and I think it turned out well. I still think there’s room for an expert chart but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Kusumi Koharu - Konnichi Pa: Expert 11
I just made this for the lulz and maybe from a suggestion from Kirarin☆Snow of ★MINI MONI MANIA★ but it’s actually a fun chart… if you can handle jumpstream and 16ths at 165bpm. Doesn’t sound so bad when I say it, but it tires me out a bit.

C-ute - Tokaikko Junjou: Hard 9, Expert 12
This one I made a little while ago actually. I still have to make a medium for maiZe of fields of maiZe and BerryZ but haven’t quite gotten around to that. Nothing too groundbreaking in these charts but I find them challenging and the song’s quite fun.

Berryz Koubou - Yuke Yuke MONKEY DANCE: Expert 11
A few gimmicks ahead. I wasn’t the biggest fan of this song but since 5 came out, it’s been popping up whenever I put the album on and all I could see were arrows. These arrows.

Pendulum - Mutiny: Expert 11
12th notes make my life. This song has a lot of them thanks to the drumming pattern. Beware the minefields.

Pendulum - Showdown (Long Version): Hard 10
I made this for a friend to help her with her stamina, timing and jumps. You be the judge and watch this video of me doing it.

Enjoy!!

Also, comments, suggestions, and requests are ALWAYS WELCOME :D

Here’s round two with a slightly modified line up. The first one was an experiment of sorts to see if I can actually make a listenable mixtape. Now that I know that I can, I’ve added a little bit of a theme: tough love. Originally, I named this playlist “aggressive technopop” but Secret Secret isn’t all that aggressive or tough for that matter… ah well. I tried to mix all of the harder and edgier technopop tracks from artists I enjoy listening to. Anyway, tracklist and download links after the jump!

Perfume - Secret Secret
Aira Mitsuki - GALAXY BOY
Suzuki Ami - FREE FREE
Perfume - edge
MEG - MODEL
Genki Rockets - Star Line
capsule - FLASHBACK
Suzuki Ami - ONE
Perfume - GAME
capsule - REALiTy
MEG - PRISM BOY

TechnoPopLove 2 : tough love

As always, comments very much appreciated! Also, if I’ve missed any good technopop that should’ve been in here, let me know! I’m always interested in incorporating new acts into the mix. <3

I recorded a podcast! I did it from 4am-5am! It might suck but I can’t remember. I didn’t shout to anyone because everyone was asleep when I did this but I love you you all… you know who you are.

I did this podcast entirely in GarageBand and with the built-in iSight mic on my MacBook! Let me know how the quality is in the comments :D Also, the podcast is in m4a format to include chapter separation and dynamic album art. Make sure you listen with the album art preview window open for a surprise during the 2nd MC.

Enjoy!

Song list:
intro - TC feat. Jakes - Deep (Roni Size VIP) (Drum & Bass)
Aira Mitsuki - ROMANTIC ROPE (TechnoPop)
Computer Club - Load Rocket (Gridlok Remix) (DarkStep)
MEG - NATALIE <FM16 MIX> (TechnoPop)
m-flo loves Nomiya Maki & Crazy Ken Band - COSMIC NIGHT RUN (HipHop/Samba)

I notice I use some pretty odd comparisons and adjectives in some of my reviews - the one that sticks out in my head the most is the arpy “spherical” synths in MEG’s SEARCHLIGHT. To all you music bloggers out there, do certain instruments sound like shapes to you? Or for a more general approach, do certain songs or instruments conjure abstract ideas, shapes, or numbers when listening.

I’ll try and keep this in mind for my next review, oddly enough, will probably be SAWA’s COLORS mini-album whose song titles consist of ManyColors, Blue, Yellow, Pink, and Green. You’ll be hearing from me if they fail to deliver their specified colour.
