[single review] Perfume - Dream Fighter

Cutting right into the thick of things, I don’t agree with a lot of the opinions flying about concerning this single. Gotta find some sources but people are saying that Perfume’s style changed with this track - that the voices and instrumental sound different. Personally, I don’t find it all that different - especially with the voices.

Starting with the instrumental track, Nakata busts out the real drum kit like he did with Puppy love on the GAME album (it being my 3rd favourite track overall). Everything else sounds like good old Perfume to me. I especially love the hat line throughout. The bassline is fairly standard, nothing particularly rumbly but carries well. The real feature instrument is the piano and electric keyboard. The arpeggios throughout the song really add the dreamy effect and the simple touches Nakata adds in are the icing on an already delicious cake.

And for the topping? I like strawberries. There happens to be 3 strawberries with the names of a~chan, nocchi, and kashiyuka on this Dream Fighter cake. Like most Perfume singles, I find the melody to stick to me like syrup does on pancakes. Not the runny kind, but the really thick and slow kind. Hrmm… molasses?

I guess syrup should stick since the ladies’ outfits are a syrupy yellow and are really sweet in all senses of the word. As usual, they assume their roles as the classy one, the girly one, and the leggy one. I just have to say that kashi’s boots are definitely made for walkin’ if you know what I mean.

Product packaging is cute. Even the obi paper is textured and shimmery like the insert that has cute solo pictures of each of the ladies.

The B-side, Negai, is a nice treat for the quiet technopop types. People have been calling it macaroni part 2. I think that it feels a bit more emotionally charged than macaroni. It’s probably because it’s slower and less playful. As slow and chill macaroni is, it’s still got a bit of pep in its step. Negai, however, just makes me want to lie down and reflect on things.

Overall, love the package and hope this keeps going.

  • New Theme Applied (TMA+DFcolours)
    • Just giving props to the new theme made by The Master Plan called "The Morning After". I modified the colours and some of the theme functionality to fit my needs. I think it looks pretty slick. What do you think?
  • [site news] Dream Fighter colour scheme
    • New "theme". I need my Dream Fighter CD+DVD to come so I can get an HQ cap of that scene. I'll update it when I can. In other news, I now have 6 draft articles. *sigh*
  • [site news] Rottara Theme <3
    • Just a quick note that a) I'm still alive and b) there's a new theme in town. I have 4 articles in draft and can't seem to find any spare time to work on them. It's been a busy few weeks here at blmHQ. Life's happening. Darn you, life. Ah well. A person can only do so much.
  • [site news] Happy 1000! …as of 10 days ago.
    • Hey guys, here's another total aside from everything music related again and just a few stats for people who enjoy that kind of thing. I've officially hit over 1000 unique visits as of August 23rd which clocked in at 1,016 visitors at the end of the day. I didn't notice this earlier because that weekend, probably at that exact time, I was doing my first (and probably only) attempt at Century Club which I did complete and attained "Grand Master" status (no throwing up throughout the entire game). For everyone who's been with me since the blogger days and when I got my first article on IW, thanks for sticking around! :) Thanks for making my hobbies worth while. And here's to 1000 more visitors! *cheers*
  • [site news] Would you look at the time?
    • A month has passed since I've moved over to the green pastures of International Wota webspace. boylikesmusic on Blogger opened in December 9th, 2007 and closed July 6th, 2008. From December 9th to now, blm on Blogger has received 1,915 page loads. From the time blm on IW started on July 6th to now, it's received 1,979 page loads. boylikesmusic on IW did what blm on Blogger in a month compared to 7 months. Of course not all of these page loads are legitimate visitors but still, it makes me happy to see my baby growing up. I'd just like to thank all the readers and those interested in the semi-original content produced and released on this site. Comments really do help and I'm open to everything, though since I'm not getting a lot of comments on my work, it must mean I'm doing something right that people don't feel the need to change. Tee hee. Glass half full ftw. Cheers guys, and enjoy the many more months to come!
