[Blogs] Our Second Blossoming Breaks the Cycle

Breaking the Cycle

Recommended reading. Second Blossoming takes a break from his headfirst dive into Hello! Project to introduce three bands who play, as he so eloquently puts it, “testosterone-packed and head-smashing music.” He’s right about sometimes needing to take a break from female singers, and the three bands he chooses to break up the monotony are a welcome relief from the “flood of estrogen” he’s been experiencing lately.

[Blogs] Pengie’s Reaction to HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR Vocalist’s Departure

Maakii to leave HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR

Pengie at Unchained has also been struck by the sudden news of Maki leaving Haikara. While tears have been shed, Pengie recollects herself and explains from a fan’s perspective that we fans, cannot do anything to stop these abrupt actions from happening. We can only watch them from the sidelines and cheer them on until the end.

[News] Maki leaves HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR

DCT’s Nakamura marries H&MC’s Maki

Sad news for H&MC fans. Tokyograph announces marriage between the bass player of DREAMS COME TRUE, Nakamura Masato and vocalist of HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR, Maki. The couple had been seeing each other from this spring and submitted their marriage registration not too long ago. Maki decided to leave H&MC by the end of the year, as the other members accepted her decision and will continue their activities without her.

It is unknown whether Yuusuke will be the main vocalist afterwards or perhaps H&MC will find a new vocalist.

[News] ELLEGARDEN Announces Hiatus

ELLEGARDEN going on indefinite hiatus

Tokyograph has an announcement from punk/rock band ELLEGARDEN, who have decided to suspend their activities for an indefinite period of time (possibly permanently). This is considerably sad news, especially considering the fact that they had an album planned for July of this year that will now never see a release.

[Blogs] Unchained talking about CHERRYBLOSSOM

CHERRYBLOSSOM in springtime

Our very own Pengie takes a look at CHERRYBLOSSOM and their second single ‘Harukaze LOVER SONG’. The tune has a lovely upbeat quality to it, and it’s everything you’d come to expect from light ska/punk music, as explained by Pengie herself. The video to the song is also included for your viewing pleasure.

[Blogs] 4 Out Of 5 Puffy AmiYumi Fans Agree: Avril Lavigne Sucks

All Because of Avril Lavigne

Recommended reading. The news that Avril Lavigne is going to write (or at least be given songwriting credit alongside Butch Walker on) the forthcoming Puffy AmiYumi single “All Because of You”, isn’t sitting well with many Puffy fans, including Jeff at the Puffy blog AmiYumidas. Jeff links several other reactions (including a thread about the single and collaboration at fan site PuffyAmiYumiWorld.com and this editor’s “nasty and NSFW blog post” on the subject) to back up his assertion that Avril isn’t qualified to be involved with anything within a 100-mile radius of Puffy, and also advises Ami and Yumi not to make a big deal out of the collaboration because of Avril’s repeatedly tarnished reputation.

[Blogs] Karakui on Sanshin Punk Rock Band

Music: ‘Sanshin punk rock band’ Yamato

Highly recommended reading. This just struck me as a really cool idea, though I’m sure there’s some back story I’m missing since Karakui says they’re a trio but there’s four members in the PVs. It doesn’t seem like they use the sanshin for all their songs, either, but they do so here, making a straightforward punk song into something wonderfully… Okinawan, I guess. Give this a chance, you just may love it.

[Blogs] YODC Shares Judy and Mary Clips

Judy and Mary “Motto”

Tsuji Eriku shares a couple of very fun performance clips of the Judy and Mary song. The first one, with a background of Tokyo in Christmastime, is particularly good. And yeah, Yuki is looking quite edible…

[Hello! Project] H!P girls plus Fender Strats equals…

Those Precious Moments - Part 7

From Kakko-ii.com, a joint collaboration between Wu & Zush reveals two things they seem to share with this writer: A dream of seeing Hello! Project members pick up guitars and make like Ron Asheton or Robert Fripp, and an appreciation for the talents of ex-Whiteberry bassist Yukari Hasegawa. Throw in a dream-team of J-Pop All-Stars (I concur with a lot of the selections, although I think Ami and Yumi should share lead vocals with Yuki Maeda) and a fan image of Miyabi from Berryz Koubou working a black Fender Precision Bass and you get a different view of J-Pop not normally seen on the J-Pop Blogosphere.

Yukki

US expatriate Cykeichan met ex-Whiteberry vocalist Yuki Madea at a show which had her new band Yukki on the bill. This same cat witnessed Whiteberry’s last ever Tokyo concert (and obtained a tin of their guitar picks from the merch stand for me) in 2004. Lucky bastard. :)

[Media Site] More rare top-drawer J-punk

Sha-London

The folks at 7-inch Punk have posted another vinyl rip, this time of an eleven-song flexidisc by a band called Sha-London. J-punk legends The Execute were involved in this rare 1983 release, as one member of the band produced it and another sat in the drum chair for the session.

[Media Site] How do you say “slamdance” in Japanese?

V/A-BEST RUN FAST

7inchpunk.com, a website that offers all kinds of downloadable vinyl rips of rare punk records from all over the globe, has for its latest offering two of a series of Japanese punk compilations entitled Best Run Fast. Curiously, the first of these was released as a flexidisc rather than on regular vinyl. Both of these came out in the early 90’s but on the first EP, there are two tracks from a band named Slayer that is definitely not the still-running thrash metal quartet that gave us Reign In Blood.
