One for the K-pop fans – Girly Berry

One group you might not yet know about is a Thai idol-y girl pop unit Girly Berry. I just found out about them myself. They were formed in Bangkok, Thailand in 2002 and the members are (from L-to-R in above picture) Nannie, Giftza, Gybzy and Belle. Why do I say it’s one for the K-pop fans?
I haven’t heard their earlier material, but their latest mini-album sounds exactly like the current K-pop scene. I’m not just saying this cause of the autotune that’s sometimes present, but even the production is very similar to especially stuff like Wonder Girls… Tell Me, Nobody, So Hot… those kinds of tracks. I’m not going to investigate because the Thai language is a bitch to romanize, but I’d be willing to bet that they’ve worked with a K-pop producer on some tracks.
It’s not like I’ve seen anything from them yet aside from MV’s, but my favorite girls are definitely Gybzy and Nannie (above). You know, Nannie, the one with the cute, kinda boyish looking face? Uhhh… that’s a little dangerous to think out loud though. I mean, it is Thailand we’re talking about here after all. But don’t worry, you should be able to rest easy with this group. See, I investigated the Thaipop scene a little, and it seems that when it comes to girl groups that have a little more dick on them than what you might be used to in a girl group, they don’t hide it but rather milk it for all its worth. In fact, it seems like ladyboy pop groups are even more popular. Funny how that works…
But, Nannie’s the cutest one for me. I thought she was definitely the hottie in there, but I showed Girly Berry’s stuff to a couple of friends and one of them immediately preferred Belle and the other said Giftza is definitely the hottest. So, maybe there’s a little here for everyone? After doing some more research though, I found that you can’t overlook Gybzy either. While Nannie is definitely the cutie, Gybzy is the crazy hot model type of Girly Berry:
They just released a new mini-album on November 18th called Berry Secret. I managed to somehow fish it off a crappy Thai download site and it’s quite a decent release. It’s not amazing but honestly now, when did you last hear a K-pop album that was all-around awesome either?
On a sidenote, did you know that they still sell VCD’s in Thailand? And I don’t mean just pirated products, but they officially released this album along with a VCD. How sweet is that?! I don’t think I’ve seen one single person burn a VCD even for private use during the 00’s. It’s like hanging onto VHS and refusing to move onto DVD, except VCD is twice as worthless and I couldn’t imagine VCD’s having even the slightest feeling of nostalgia for anyone. But now I suddenly want to get myself a VCD of something. Gotta love those crazy Thai people!
Its eight tracks are split pretty evenly among ballads and more lively stuff. The ballads aren’t all that special… it’s been a long, long time since I last heard a ballad in the mainstream Asian pop category that wasn’t generic. In my mind, the highlight here is the K-pop-inspired stuff such as the track I posted at the start. But as expected of a Thai group… in comparison to K-pop, their songs and MV’s just ooze sex. Sure, there’s all the cutesy posing going on that you’d expect to see Wonder Girls or SNSD doing, but it’s different. While the silly poses are very cute, their eyes reflect only sex at you. Beneath the cute surface it’s all just dirty. I love it.
By far the best track on here is the album opener, สวย เริ่ด เชิด…ยอม (Suay rerd cherd…yorm.) It’s great and absolutely the catchiest thing I’ve heard in ages. Do yourself a favor and watch this stuff:

@Valeria: I definitely want Nannie to be MINE too! She immediately appealed to me the most when watching their MV’s. She’s awesome. I wonder if there’s any funny subbed material out there, TV appearances or the like…

Yeh, I just think shes a cute little thing, I also like Gybzy but Nannie certainly appeals to me more. I wish there was some funny subbed material, if you do come across anything do you get the email addy that i have to send if so use that PWEASE. I dont know what is up with Thai chicks but their odd looking sometimes and super hot the rest. xD If i was u id give Faye Fang Kaew a try too.
Ha, i upped that for a friend a few days ago was searching for their first album(the only one i cant find) then i saw this so i opened it :D and no problem just thought i might share it so you can hear their past music. Give me a review. :] I have a few more if you want those i can only up to 4shared though.
@Valeria: Nannie is the cute type, but Gybzy looks pretty much like a model to me at least. She’s gorgeous. :) Hmmm, honestly I don’t have any sources for Thaipop stuff… the best I have is jpopsuki, but they don’t have anything. You’d probably have better luck finding the stuff than me, if any is out there that is! I do have your email though, so I’ll let you know if I ever run across any.
And yeh… I know what you mean with the Thai thing. Their looks seem to be a lot more unpredictable than their Japanese/Korean/Chinese counterparts. :P Faye Fang Kaew huh? I’ll have to investigate on YouTube. I’m completely new to Thaipop and I was just clicking the related videos in Girly Berry’s MV’s… and honestly, to all of them my reaction was basically “…are you kidding me?” A lot of that stuff seemed kinda… cheap to me. But I’m sure it’s like any other music really. You have to find the gems in there eh. Oh and as to your offer, sure! I’ll take anything more you want to share. :) 4shared is cool by me. A review huh. :P I haven’t had time to listen to any of those albums yet but when I get around to it, I’ll consider whipping out a review.
Yeh nannie is just so cute you want to kiss her, and Gybzy is model material, everywhere i see her she’s in a bikini posing. i used to have her in the bikini with the top strings untied just for a friend in msn lol. and thats sad cuz, i need to know other people on the net who likes thai even half as much as i do. then more stuff comes around yet i have not Honestly im pretty new to the Thai scene i only have alittle over a gig of thai music everyother type is sky high. and thanx that would be awesome.
Yeh there looks are more deceiving especially with what you said above about lady boys. Thats scary enough. Plus their looks are completely different than other Asians well to me atleast. . and yup I will send you a link for them. I see that too, how cheap there vids can look. luckily its still good stuff like you mentioned. I just wish Thais cared about choreography like i do watching I remember once mentioning something about girly berrys choreography being off in a video safe to say my comment was deleted immediately lol. I forgot to mention Prik Thai and Tata young to other thai artist that I love Prik Thai is a rock group fronted by a women. but good stuff. and good i will be sending you a few artist from different places but still some good stuff.

Hmmm, choreography huh. Honestly I’m lost on all that stuff, I wouldn’t be able to pick apart an awesome dance from a completely hopeless one even if I tried. I’ll take your word for it though! :P
Ladyboys are frightening eh! Actually, the reason why I found out about Girly Berry in the first place is because a friend of mine who’s into J-pop is leaving to Thailand tomorrow for three weeks, and he was wondering if Thailand has any cute girl group alternatives… I tried youtubeing “Thai pop” or something, and the first one that came up was a ladyboy group. Typical Thailand huh! :P Luckily though the second one was Girly Berry, and here we are. :) I probably listen to equal amounts of groups with both males and females… but something about ladyboy groups seems kind of awkward to me. Maybe I’m just closed-minded though. :P

Yeh, we’ll if the choreography is cute im bound to take notice. More so if its hot. No problem on the links. Yeah, I was just listening to more of their music, amazing music it is. Never really was to huge into metal but there something different. I only like a few bands in metal. Not sure if metalocalypse counts. Lol but yeah theres more to metal then that. And same here.

Hey, why not go then? In all honesty though, I don’t think my friend is that big on the whole music, culture or language aspect or anything like that… if you asked me, I’d say he’s just going there to, uhh, get acquainted with the whole prostitution thing there. He won’t admit to it though. :P
Honestly I barely listen to K-pop at all. The reason I titled this post “one for the K-pop fans” is because I know how hugely popular it’s becoming (and has already become) and I know this sound is very similar to that of recent Wonder Girls and that kind of thing. Honestly, the only Korean stuff I have on my HD is SNSD and Wonder Girls. Laaame! So, I’m not exactly a huge fan. I’ll be honest, the incessant auto-tune is a turn off for me…
Yeh, there was a time when I flat out hated all metal. That changed at some point though… hence the name of this blog. :)
I sincerely recommend my way of celebrating Christmas! Which is actually not unlike my celebrations for any other holiday…

:o Not much of a kpop fan eh, I have to admit i like some(alot) of the autotuned artist well some of the songs, but I oddly hate autotuned rap. I can only name one artist that uses
autotune that i can be a fan of. and i agree its more popular than i thought it was gonna be. I actually love Wonder Girls and SNSD :D your not lame, just seem to
have preferred taste in certain music, No prob with that.
Yeah that’s why i like watching performances where the girls ACTUALLY SING live. Makes me go “nice their actually talented” :D
Ahh that goes for me too, I was never a big fan of metal, not the hard stuff. Mainly because of the mainstream bad stuff that sounds nothing
like Opeth. I was genuinely surprised at how awesome they sounded. I see Its rare to find many metal fans who listen to Kpop and Jpop and Tpop.

the house for thanksgiving. New years i drank like there was no tomorrow. I’m lucky i got a liquor store right up the street from me. :D
Personally I think Tata Young is the hottest Thai pop star today. She’s got a fabulous voice as well as a sexy and beautiful figure.
