Kohaku Participants Revealed

NHK announces official Kohaku performer lineup (Tokyograph)
Kohaku Uta Gassen 2010 Line-Up Revealed (IXA Ready – Fist On!)

I’m really curious as to what the qualifications for appearing on the Kohaku are. For those of you who don’t know, the Kohaku Uta Gassen is a show that comes on every New Year’s Eve broadcast on TV and Radio, nationally and internationally. Two teams, Red and White, compete against each other. Red consists all of female artists or groups with female vocals, while White is the male counterpart. Both teams should consist of the most popular acts from the previous year, but some of the choices just confound me. Like seriously, this is Wada Akiko’s millionth time on the show. What has she released in the last year?! Anyway, if you follow the industry, then the winner should already be obvious. Nice play, Mr. Kitagawa.

Say Hello to the KiLLKiLLS For a Healthy Dose of Punk-Pop

Ex-ketchup mania punk band KiLLKiLLS complete first Japan tour (Selective Hearing)

Are there any other Ketchup Mania fans having withdrawals like me.  Jeez I loved that band, and was so sad to see them break up.  But when I first heard Dai and Wani of Ketchup Mania had formed a new band, I was skeptical.  After all, it was the lead singer Hiro that I was truly enamored with.

However, Greg has posted an update on the KiLLKiLLS…I must say I am really impressed!  Sure I still miss Hiro, but Dai, Wani and their new groupmates bring the same energy and style that made KM so awesome.  The group recently released a new album and completed a national tour.  Ever cooler, they are being supported by JapanFiles!  Check out the photos and their latest PV!  Greg has also posted a bunch of band links if they happen to catch your fancy.

It Must Be Something In The Water

Kaela Kimura pregnant, getting married to Eita (Tokyograph)

Tsuji, multiple Japanese celebs, and now Kaela Kimura. It just has to be something in the water. You know, the Japanese birth rate is declining, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Japanese gov’t put something like Aphrodisiac in the water system. For some reason I just can’t imagine her as a mother… And to think, Eita is the father. Those will be some cute alien looking babies, that’s for sure.

Japan Nite 2010 Might Be Coming to a Town Near You

Japan Nite 2010 lineup announced (Tokyograph)

SXSW (South by SouthWest) might or might not be coming to a town near you, peeps. Held once a year, the festival just announced their lineup for the tour. So far, the bands confirmed seem not well known, but more bands have yet to be announced. Confirmed though, and this is the only name I recognize, is Chatmonchy. You should definitely check out this tour if you’re interested in Japanese Indie music.

CK’s Japan Tour Extra…Ketchup Mania Says Farewell to Tokyo! (CK’s H!P Blog)

Our own CK is in the middle of his pilgrimage stay in the land of milk and honey. Yes, he’s again in Japan and when you read his travelogs you wish to be there with him. CK has already seen Morning Musume, AKB48, C-ute and Ketchup Mania live on stage.

It was MoMusu’s Nakano concert which CK was enjoying from his 8th row seat. Wow, tell us did you smell Reina’s sweet sweat?! Anyway, CK has already plans to see Morning Musume again on coming weekend. Not once but twice. You lucky bastardo.

CK has now posted three reports from Tokyo to his blog but there is of course more to come because he is staying there all in all 12 days. It might sound like a long time but when you really are there it’s very short and hectic time and the departure happens far too soon. Always.

[Blogs] Voice actresses gone punk

Pankore/Pun-Colle: Female Seiyuu Punk Songs Renditions (noble phantasm)

This is hilarious oddity althought I’ve not yet had chance to listen this collection of legendary punk, new wave and grunge songs remade by Japanese anime voice actresses.

For example Rie Tanaka, who has given her voice among others to Gundam Seed & Chobits, does her versions of Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy In The U.K.” and Rancid’s “Ruby Soho”.

Nikki from noble phantasm blog has done a track by track review of this “Pankore” album.

Even though they said ‘punk’ in the title, I’m more inclined to think ‘pink’, says Nikki.

Hah ha, never mind the bollocks, here is pink rock. Sayu, would you like to sing The Buzzcocks’ “Orgasm Addict”?

Oreskaband at Warped Tour 2008

Tokyograph…san…gets up close for Oreskaband’s appearance on the Warped Tour (somewhere). He even helped out the band a bit and gets some good shots in. They seem to be doing great!

[Blogs] Japan Live with Go Chic

Go Chic At Formoz Festival

Ken unearths a Tawainese band named Go Chic at the Formoz festival, and there’s plenty of Perfume comparisons to think about. That might get some of you interested, I’m sure, and the list of sounds these five girls are supposed to posses is really something.

[Blogs] Rockerica has Facts about Rainbows

PV: alice nine. – RAINBOWS

Rockerica has a very interesting approach in reviewing alice nine.’s latest. His use of unique facts is wonderful change to the standard writing style, and he makes the best of it by including amusing and interesting points about the PV.

Although I’m not sure about Fact 5…I don’t see hot girls going mental about Dir en Grey…although the term handsome is subjective to each individual…

[Blogs] Our Second Blossoming Breaks the Cycle

Breaking the Cycle

Recommended reading. Second Blossoming takes a break from his headfirst dive into Hello! Project to introduce three bands who play, as he so eloquently puts it, “testosterone-packed and head-smashing music.” He’s right about sometimes needing to take a break from female singers, and the three bands he chooses to break up the monotony are a welcome relief from the “flood of estrogen” he’s been experiencing lately.
